American women help Blaan women
MALAPATAN, Sarangani (March 14, 2007) – B'laan women continue to pursue broader horizons as the Ded Libon Di Lasang Association formally launched their mat weaving center in barangay Upper Lasang Monday.
The association received financial grant from the American Women's Club of the Philippines in recognition of their efforts to preserve their culture through mat weaving.
Some people call them the "dreamweavers." Their designs are colorful and no mat has the same design. Each banig (mat) is inspired by the dreams of the weaver.
According to B'laan culture, the designs reflect the B'laan's relationship with their God - D'wata.
"Dako among pasalamat sa tabang na gihatag kanamo," said Rosalinda Bantilan, chairperson of the association.
Ded Libon Di Lasang, which means group of women in Upper Lasang, has 18 weavers. Two are cultural masters.
"This is not only their livelihood. It also reveals the creativity of the B'laan as evidenced by the intricate designs," said Sarangani provincial administrator Fredo Basino, who was born and raised in the area.
The association purchased 18 eyeglasses, a sewing machine and erected a weaving center from the P140,000 given by the American Women's Group of the Philippines.
"Nalipay kami ug dako sa pag-ila sa among kultura ug ang paghatag ug tabang sa among kababaihan ," said tribal chieftain Basino Bantilan.
Made of romblon, a plant with sturdy leaves, the process of weaving one mat takes a considerable amount of time. The romblon leaves has first to be dried, dyed and then woven.
Rituals according to B'laan culture are done but only the weavers know about them.
"This process is a natural and divine process," noted Basino. He explained that the mat weaving is sacred in the culture of the B'laans.
The mats are sold locally. However, there are orders coming from as far as Manila as aggressive promotion is being done by the provincial government.
"The mats are wonderful. The designs are awesome. You definitely have something here which you cannot find anywhere in the world," said Lauren Patty, a Harvard University medical student who had chosen Sarangani as the area for her rural medicine immersion.

“Maitum Jars” to be declared as National Cultural HeritageProvincial Information Office, 27 November 2002
ALABEL, Sarangani -- Dr. Eusebio Dizon of the National Museum said that some of the now famous “Maitum Jars,” the anthropomorphic secondary burial jars displayed at the Museum, are soon to be declared as “National Cultural Heritage.” This means, according to him during the “Symposium on Maitum Archaeological Finds” held Tuesday (Nov. 26) that these artifacts could neither be sold nor taken out of the country. He did not, however, elaborate when would the declaration take place.
Discovered in 1991 at Pinol Cave, Maitum, this province, the anthropomorphic potteries of human figures depicting various facial expressions are associated to the Metal Age in the Philippines.
Dizon, Curator 1 of the Archaeology Division and Head of the Underwater Archaeology Section of the National Museum, described Pinol Cave as “the most significant cave in Mindanao” and its finds as “unparalleled in Southeast Asia.”
Recently, potsherds from various ages likely 3000 years old had been recovered at Linao Cave, Barangay Kiambing, also in Maitum. His team is presently conducting further study on the collected shards to determine their precise carbon dates.
Dizon said both finds could provide significant information and material evidences to trace not only the Philippine prehistory but also of Southeast Asia. (PIO-Sarangani)

III. BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE OF THE ACTIVITY:
Sarangani is multi-cultural province. It comprises of the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) known as lumads, the Moro and the settlers. Like the rest of Mindanao, the province is also a melting pot of the different cultures of the ethno-linguistic groups due to rise of materialism and influence of western culture through media and other forms. Information and Education Campaign (IEC) is deemed necessary to increase the level of awareness of Sarangans and there is a need to provide them proper venue where they could showcase their exemplified talents and skills to revive their cultural heritage and treasures as well.
The Indigenous Peoples Development Program (IPDP) of the Office of the Governor through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Sarangani Indigenous People Professionals Association (SIPPA) and the Local Government of Units in Sarangani, held a showcase of cultural performances known as the Pasundayag 2007, in line with the National Arts Month celebration with its theme “Ani ng Sining, Yaman ng Lahi”. This significant event was one of the strategic campaigns in preserving, protecting as well as promoting the different cultures and traditions of the ethno-linguistic groups found herein through cultural performances. This serves also as development process of the Sarangani local artists to participate in whatever cultural expositions and performances whereby cultural heritage would be showcased, protected and promoted respectively; and a venue of raising consciousness and improving self-esteem that prompt Sarangans to move forward with rich cultural heritage being preserved.
Furthermore, the event was participated in by the seven municipalities of the province and to put in place the creation of the Artists Guilds of Sarangani (AGOS) through the Sining Sarangani project.
IV. OBJECTIVES OF THE ACTIVITY:
1. To preserve, protect and promote the Filipino culture through cultural showcase of performances;
2. To increase awareness of Sarangans and their appreciation of their respective cultures and traditions;
